Peter (from the UK) replaced Bethany. He spent 5 weeks there and here are his comments about his visit - For my Trek, I went to the Wolof village of Mbane in Northern Senegal for four weeks during a summer break from university. The village has a remote; ‘out-on-your-own’ feel to it as it is about an hour from the nearest town by bush taxi. At Mbane I was able to get a taste of life in rural Africa and an insight of how many people in world live. I found the pace of life here much slower compared to that of London, but the warmth and friendliness of the people was refreshing. My work was in a summer school for children aged from three to fifteen years old. The school involved giving lesson in French, playing games and sport and my co-worker read Bible stories in Wolof. During my stay I was able to meet quite a number of the young people of the village. I made a number of friends by joining in with football and to one I gave some lessons to help him complete his Baccalaureate. I really enjoyed my stay in Mbane getting alongside the children and young people there. At the start I found it difficult having to speak in French, and the little Wolof that I had learnt, most of the time, but I was able to get through this. I think that the biggest thing that I will take back home with me is a real freshness back to my Christian life and witness at my university

I like the variety of my ministry so I can be in touch with different people especially with the kids and the young people. Twice a week, I am doing alphabetisation work with the youngest boys of the "House of Hope". Sometimes during school holidays or on weekends, I do some free time activity with them. Weekly, I am helping in a Senegalese family. That means that I take care of the children, do some homework with them and one girl, I teach some piano lessons. By the way, I helped out in a music school teaching how to play the piano. It was a good experience to see all the young people who are willing to learn an instrument. I also enjoy the time with the youth of the church "Keur Yalla".  At the moment, we are preparing a dance for the Easter service with some of them.  It’s encouraging to see whats going on in their lives but it’s important to motivate and support them in different situations.

My time now here in Senegal is almost up and I am sad about going back in less than two months. I work in different ministries here in the capital Dakar. Each one of these is a personal gain: There is so much stuff to learn and just to try out (languages, culture, work you have never done before). One of the works I do is taking care of the little kids for the Sunday during church service. A friend of mine and me also look after the boys of a missionary family here in exchange every two weeks. Another part of my schedule is helping out in the guesthouse of WEC International here in Dakar. Usually, I do the laundry; answer the telephone as also a lot of other little things that need to be done. Once a week, I meet with a teenage girl to do a discipleship course with her with the help of a book in French. Out of these meetings developed a wonderful friendship I am so thankful for! I also teach a woman how to read and write in Wolof. Even though she has some difficulties, I just love to visit and to be with her because she is just such a nice person. For everyone else who is interested in doing a missionary short term trip: GO FOR IT! You will have the greatest time you ever had and a trip that will change your life. Just trust in God and be open to new things.
